Craft Enthusiasts Unite at DesignsToLove
DesignsToLove is an online craft community that revolves around offline crafts. I think this service has huge potential and could be enormously popular a year or two down the road. It's a community that targets a niche audience, much like GaiaOnline, and executes well. I'm pretty sure there's a large relatively untapped audience for this type of community.
GaiaOnline started as a great way for a specific audience to come together and interact, and eventually grew to millions of members and investment money from Benchmark Capital and Redpoint Ventures. I think DesignsToLove can do the same with craft enthusiasts, who love to share and learn from each other. Although the domain name is slightly long, it's definitely not hard to remember or type in. It's actually refreshing to see that they refrained from choosing a typical Web 2.0 name like "designr" or "craftster".
Personally, I wouldn't have thought a social website for crafts would be developed so well, but a look at the homepage indicates pretty clearly that the people behind the service know exactly what they're doing. I would be very surprised if this website fails to explode (in popularity, of course).
