David Lenehan (shown wearing a yellow shirt) is the founder of PollDaddy, a service of Infacta. Visit the company blog here.

What is Polldaddy, how large is your team, and how did Polldaddy get started?

Polldaddy is a free online tool, which allows our users to create polls and place them in their websites and blogs. A 3 man team worked on PollDaddy. Myself, Jonathan Hill, and our designer Mark Hardy. We have a number of other marketing tools that we have developed, such as GroupMail, GroupSurveys and GroupMetrics. We really just wanted to give something back to our customers for free, and considering that most of our products are based around communication, we thought that PollDaddy would be a perfect fit.

What was your development process like, and what technologies did you choose in building this service?

Once we had decided what we wanted to do in terms a free tool for our customers, we set about developing a concept around it. There are lots of free poll tools out there, and we wanted to see what we could do differently. The main benefit of Polldaddy is that the user can vote on the poll there and then, and are not redirected to another site and there are no pop up windows. This makes for a better user experience. We also had a bit of fun with the design of the site, it is a big departure from the kind of style we use for our existing products. We just wanted to try out something new, and it seems to have gone down quite well. The backend of the site is built with SQL server for the database, and plain old ASP. The polls work through a method which as far as I know is the underlying technology behind JSON. We basically just used a lot of JavaScript, a lot of CSS, and a lot of ASP. Nothing too complicated. They are just polls after all!

What is your business model?

We don't have any major plans for a business model for the site at present. It is just a free tool for people to use and enjoy. We have links to our other products on the site, and if people are interested in them, then they are more than welcome to purchase. We have free versions of all of our software available for people to try out. We will never be placing adverts in our polls or anything dramatic like that. Just a simple link to PollDaddy.com is all we require.
