You've been getting a good amount of positive press and feedback. What are Blue Dot's unique features and how are you approaching the concept of social networking and bookmarking differently?

Blue Dot is about Social Discovery® which encourages social interaction through finding and sharing of interesting Web content. Many social networking sites ask “Who do you know?” and require users to share personal information. Blue Dot asks “What can I learn from my friends?” and answers with Social Discovery, the use of the Web as a way to communicate and share with friends.

Compared to social bookmarking sites, Blue Dot places a greater emphasis on your friends, family, and co-workers. For example, when you create a Dot to share a web page, you can choose to share it with the entire world, all your friends, certain friends, or just for yourself. And, once a Dot has been created, we make it easy for you to discover any comments left by your friends. As another example, a main view on our site is a summary of your friends' Dots, or what they have been finding interesting on the web. When you perform a search for 'digital camera' in this view, you are searching your friends' recommendations on digital cameras. Having said that, many of our users use Blue Dot as a tool just for themselves.

Describe the process through which your team dreams up, plans, and implements new features and functionalities. How is your team organized and how does it function?

From day one, Blue Dot has been about solving real-life problems. We started the company, in part, because I wanted a way to continually know the news articles, books, and movies my sister found interesting. No existing technology really did that well. Today, we continue to operate the same way. We start with a pain point or need and make sure we can articulate real scenarios before diving into design and development.

Our team is organized into functional roles, but we try and make the decision making as collaborative as possible. To facilitate this, we use a process called SCRUM. We maintain a list of all our ideas, and everybody from the team contributes to this. We try to bite off items from this list in 2-6 week development cycles. Prior to the start of a development cycle, we prioritize what to do next based on market research, user feedback, and sometimes just "what would be cool". While the SCRUM Product Owner drives this process, everybody gets to vote on and make an argument for what he/she thinks is most important.

How would you describe Blue Dot to someone in a single sentence? Why was the service named Blue Dot?

Blue Dot is the best way to save, share, and discuss what you find interesting on the web.

We chose the name Blue Dot for two reasons. First, when you look at the Earth from space, you see a small Blue Dot. Blue Dot was created to keep you connected with your friends and family no matter how far apart your may be. Second, a Dot represents simplicity. We strive to make Blue Dot truly easy-to-use and felt that a Dot was the simplest possible user interface. In fact, we frequently find our friends asking each other to "Make sure to Dot that" and "Check my Dots" at parties.
