Josh Felser is the co-founder of Grouper. Previously, he was President and a co-founder of Spinner.com, acquired by AOL. He has a BA and MBA from Duke University.

How did the acquisition by Sony came about?

We were barreling down the venture capital path when we were approached by Sony and another potential buyer. We had met with Sony a month before to discuss an operating relationship. We ultimately decided to sell because Internet video has become a big media business much more rapidly than any of us anticipated. Being part of a large media company, specifically Sony, gives us access to resources, audience, and industry-leading media devices.

How did you react to the news Universal Music filed a lawsuit against Grouper and Bolt?

The lawsuit is without merit and we expect to prevail. Our website is protected by federal law and we're vigilant about taking down copyrighted content when we're properly notified.

The video sharing space is extremely crowded, yet Grouper managed to stand out. What were some keys to Groupers success?

We take hard to use features and make them easy for consumers. We were the first to allow you to embed a video player on your blog or social network with just one click straight from our web site. We were the first to enable you to record web cam video live to our servers straight from a browser without downloading any software. We also support devices like the PSP and the iPod and downloads to the desktop over our P2P network. We have done a pretty good job marrying advanced technology and consumer must have features to build a compelling service.
