Zamzar Converts Files for Free

Zamzar is an interesting new service that launched this week. They offer free file conversion through your browser for hundreds of different types of files.

Images can be converted from one format to another. ITunes music files can be converted into MP3s. PDF files can be converted to Word documents, and vice versa.

The service is minimalistic in design, and feels very similar to file hosting service like Imageshack. After selecting and uploading 5 files of the same type, an Ajax progress bar shows you the status of the upload. Once they receive the files and convert them to your desired file type, you receive an email with a link to download the converted files.

It would be easier for users if the download link were provided immediately after uploading. However, there's probably a good reason why that isn't the way it works. The process is pretty simple and intuitive as is.

They opened up to the public only 5 days ago, but have already enjoyed a large amount of coverage and traffic growth. The service was created by two brothers based in the UK.
